Information Technology Techincal Requirements

The following system requirements are the minimum necessary to access the curriculum:

In order to complete a Kaplan Continuing Education online career training program, students need a personal computer (PC) with a modem and access to the Internet. This program incorporates the use of email, discussion board postings, and navigation of the Internet for Web Field Trips. The use of Microsoft® Word documents for a Learning Journal is recommended.

Hardware

  • A computer capable of running Windows XP or Vista, or Mac OS X with the operating system’s minimum requirements for processor, memory, and hard drive (See the Microsoft or Apple website for minimum requirements)
  • At least 10.0 GB of free hard-drive space (additional space may be needed for multimedia files)
  • 1024 x 768 monitor with a 16-bit or greater video card (24-bit preferred)
  • DVD-ROM drive or CD-ROM drive
  • A dedicated, reliable 128 Kbps or faster Internet connection
  • Sound card with speakers and microphone (for selected courses)

Software

  • Microsoft Windows operating system (XP or Vista) or Mac OS X
  • Microsoft Word version 2000 or later
  • To download Adobe Reader 7.0 or later, click here
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0, or Firefox 2.0.0.3 or later, or Safari 2.0 or later
  • A current antivirus and antispyware application that is updated regularly
  • Adobe Flash Player 9.0 or later (free download on the Internet)
  • Sun Java 2 SDK (Java 1.3.1) or later for PC (free download on the Internet)/Classic Java (MRJ 2.2.5) or later for Mac (For Cisco Courses, the "latest" version of the Java Runtime Library) (free download on the Internet)

  • Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) Certificate—Distributed Applications: Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
  • Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) Certificate—Web Applications: Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
  • Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) Certificate—Windows Applications: Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
  • Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) Certificate—Windows Vista Configuration: Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and Windows Vista with administrator rights
  • Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD) Certificate—Windows: Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
  • Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD) Certificate—Enterprise: Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and Internet Information Services (ISS) configured with administrator rights
  • Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD) Certificate—Web: Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and Internet Information Services (ISS) configured with administrator rights
  • Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) Certificate: Windows Server 2003 on a network with other computers, Active Directory with administrator rights, Windows XP with administrator rights, and Windows Vista with administrator rights
  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) Certificate: Windows Server 2003 on a network with other computers, Active Directory with administrator rights, Windows XP with administrator rights, and Windows Vista with administrator rights.
  • Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT):  Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 and current version of the Java Runtime Engine (JRE).  (Both are free downloads on the Internet.)
  • Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA):  Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 and current version of the Java Runtime Engine (JRE).  (Both are free downloads on the Internet.)
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP):  Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 and current version of the Java Runtime Engine (JRE).  (Both are free downloads on the Internet.)
  • Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA):  Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 and current version of the Java Runtime Engine (JRE).  (Both are free downloads on the Internet.)
  • Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP):  Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 and current version of the Java Runtime Engine (JRE).  (Both are free downloads on the Internet.)
